Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden will arrive in Lima on Thursday, November 14, to participate in Leaders' Week at APEC Peru 2024, taking place in the Peruvian capital, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed.

In this regard, Minister Elmer Schialer noted that both leaders, in addition to participating in this important forum, will hold separate meetings with the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte.

As for the Chinese leader, his participation in APEC will be followed by a state visit to Peru, during which, together with President Boluarte, he will inaugurate the Chinese-funded Chancay Megaport located north of Lima.

On another hand, regarding President Biden, Minister Schialer indicated that there will be a meeting with his Peruvian counterpart, during which both leaders will review bilateral relations. A significant number of White House officials accompanying the U.S. leader, along with their Peruvian counterparts, will also be present at the event.

In an interview with Punto Final investigative journalism TV program on Sunday night, Schialer reported that a total of 7,000 people will arrive in Lima these days to participate in APEC Leaders' Week.

Jointly, they are expected to generate an investment of US$40 to US$45 million in lodging and accommodation expenses, which will be injected into Peru's economy.

In contrast, the Peruvian government has invested US$30 million in hosting the APEC Summit, contracting services and creating jobs for fellow citizens.

Trump's victory

The minister also addressed concerns that a new administration under Donald Trump in the United States could affect Peruvian exports to that destination, given the announcements regarding tariff increases.

In this regard, the government official pointed out that Peru has been, is, and will remain an attractive market for U.S. investors.

The ambassador recalled that in 2017, when Trump took office, trade with Peru stood at US$12 billion. By January 2021, at the end of his term, it had reached US$16 billion, without any issues, he said.

The diplomat also dismissed concerns that the Chinese-funded Chancay Port could generate any apprehension.

He underlined that, so far, there has been no official communication from the United States to Peru, and comments to that effect have come from American journalists and analysts.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
