United States Ambassador to Peru Bernie Navarro stated on Wednesday that the Port of Callao is very important to his country. Therefore, the U.S. seeks to support its growth and the optimization of its facilities.
These remarks were made by the U.S. representative during the signing of an agreement to designate the Port of Callao and PortMiami as "sister ports."
"The Port of Callao is very important to the United States. Callao is Peru's economic engine, and the United States wants to be part of that growth at every step. That is reflected in what we are doing to modernize the port," Navarro said.
The ambassador pointed out that the United States will play a role in the future of the South American country's main port, working closely with the Peruvian Navy.
In this regard, he said that when discussing the issue of receiving cruise ships at the Port of Callao, part of the facility will be used for this purpose, noting that "there is no better partner for this type of initiative than the United States."
"We celebrate the significant progress Peru is making in strengthening and modernizing its maritime and naval infrastructure; a clear example is the US$1.5 billion strategic project for the implementation of Phases 1 and 2 of the Callao Naval Base," Navarro stated.
He explained that this initiative is backed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, with the aim of strengthening port services, as well as enhancing tourism activities and maritime operations.
"Today, we are opening another chapter of cooperation between our countries. This type of cooperation takes on particular significance in light of the priority that the administration of President Donald Trump has placed on U.S. maritime capabilities," the envoy added.
The signing ceremony for the agreement between the two ports was also attended by Transportation and Communications Minister Angelo Tangherlini, as well as officials from the Port of Callao and PortMiami.
