Address to the Nation: 'Paths of Pope Leo XIV' to turn Peru into key destination

15:32 | Lima, Jul. 28.

The President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, on Monday gave special mention to the launch of the “Paths of Pope Leo XIV” tourist route, recently implemented by the Executive Branch in honor of Monsignor Robert Prevost, who was elected Supreme Pontiff on May 8.

In her Address to the Nation marking the 204th Anniversary of Peru's Declaration of Independence, the top official stated that 2025 will be a historic year for Peru with the introduction of the "Paths of Pope Leo XIV" route.

The President said the initiative aims to make Peru a leading religious tourism destination due to its connection to the Supreme Pontiff and the rich variety of religious expressions across the country.

Mrs. Boluarte explained that in its first phase, the route will require an investment worth over S/550 million (US$115 million) from the national government, as well as regional and local governments.

It will benefit over 2.7 million residents in Lambayeque, La Libertad, Piura, and Callao regions —areas where Robert Prevost had served as a missionary and later as bishop.

At the official launch ceremony on July 21, the top official stated that the creation of the route is the result of coordinated efforts among all three levels of government.

The Head of State emphasized that the route promotes spiritual connection through the cultural and natural heritage of Lambayeque, La Libertad, Piura, and Callao regions, where His Holiness carried out his evangelizing work as missioner and bishop.

"This is a route that doesn't just pass through streets or churches, but travels through memory, faith, and the hopes of a people who never stopped dreaming and can now proudly say we have a Peruvian pope," said Mrs. Boluarte, noting that this initiative also serves as a tribute to the Supreme Pontiff.
