President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday noted the importance of the Army in regards to Peru's defense and development, adding it sees itself —by the Independence Bicentennial (2021)— as a modern and professional institution prepared for the 21st century's challenges.

In this sense, the Head of State highlighted the military's strength, as well as the unrestricted respect for legal and constitutional order it has shown over the years.

Likewise, the top official pointed out the Army is characterized for strictly complying with the duty of guarding and defending the national territory, as well as participating in the economic development of the Inca country.

He went on to add members of said institution are aware that the defense of the nation includes fighting inequality, misery, exclusion, poverty, and corruption

They have also assisted Peruvian citizens after natural catastrophes hit the country and provided support during health campaigns.

"The Army is always present when society needs it. It is an institution closely linked to Peru's origin as an independent nation," the statesman expressed.

Furthermore, it has joined the fight against violence towards women by carrying out awareness programs aimed at eradicating any kind of abuse, as well as promoting equality between male and female citizens.

It should be noted this year marks the 25th anniversary of women's incorporation into military service.

Moreover, President Vizcarra praised the Army's decision to allow young disabled people to join the voluntary military service.

Concerning the institution's immediate tasks, the top official recalled its members will be the ones responsible for guaranteeing security during the December 9 referendum
