Peru President leads Army Day ceremony

13:04 | Lima, Dec. 5.

President Martin Vizcarra leads the ceremony marking the National Army Day and the 194th Anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho.

On the occasion, he is joined by Defense Minister Jose Huerta, as well as civilian and military authorities.

The event takes place at Lima-based Army General Headquarters.

History

The Battle of Ayacucho was the last major confrontation in the history of the Spanish-American Independence process.

The said moment took place on December 9, 1824, in Pampa de la Quinua, near the Andean city of Ayacucho.

During the confrontation, revolutionary armies led by Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated Spanish Royal Forces.

Thus, Sucre's victory put an end to the Spanish colonial rule in South America and marked the consolidation of Peruvian Independence previously declared on July 28, 1821.
