Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Monday affirmed that she and Interior Minister Ruben Vargas will assess the immediate measures to be taken —within the legal framework— in the face of new complaints about alleged police abuse exercised against those citizens who participated in the demonstrations held in Peru on November 14.

The Cabinet chief pointed out that there is a structural problem not only in the National Police of Peru, but also in various institutions where there are bosses who "re-victimize people or violate their rights."

"We would be wrong to offer something that we do not have time to do, but we definitely must make changes, and as has been well pointed out, this is a structural problem (...) not only in the Police (institution); in many institutions there are bosses who re-victimize people or violate their rights," Bermudez said.

"If we can do anything to reverse this situation, you can be rest assured that we will do that," she added.

The high-ranking official specified that she would hold a meeting with the Interior minister "in light of new complaints to see what measures we can take supported by the powers that the law grants us, what immediate measures we can take, but be rest assured that we will soon have news on what other measures we can implement to recover the police."

The first fatality was 22-year-old Jack Bryan Pintado Sanchez, who suffered gunshot wounds.

The second one, Inti Sotelo Camargo —aged 24 years— was admitted to a hospital with gunshot wounds to the chest at heart level.
