Paolo Guerrero, the leading goal scorer in Peruvian national soccer team history, broke his silence after FIFA decided to suspend him for one year.
Peru's captain affirmed the situation has produced moral injury to him and his parents. Plus, the athlete claimed he will prove his
innocence and expects to be acquitted by the
world's soccer governing body.
The international player is outraged and reiterated his theory on the way the banned substance entered his body, thus leaving him out of the World Cup.
"The result was not positive. There is an investigation process. Many people talk about cocaine. I had already been suspended by FIFA for 30 days when the investigation process kicked off. It was too fast. I guess they acted in such a way because of the repercussion and because it was me. I think it's unfair," said Guerrero in statements to Globoesporte.
According to FIFA, the player tested positive for metabolite benzoylecgonine, a substance included in WADA's 2017 Prohibited List under the class "S6. Stimulants."
As stated by the striker, he has always been careful about what he eats. In fact, he asks what to eat and drink both in Peru and at Flamengo.
"I'm not going to be crazy and drink coca tea, knowing it is detrimental to me. I always ask what I can or cannot drink, which sauce I can add, and which shampoo I can use. Everyone at Flamengo knows that," he was quoted as saying.
The Peruvian soccer star said he has never consumed cocaine and that he always avoided its use. Proof of that is found in the numerous doping control tests he underwent, in which the player proved he was clean.
As is known, the Peruvian Soccer Federation (FPF) made an official statement on Paolo Guerrero's suspension imposed by FIFA, showing
support for the national striker and noting his professionalism.
