Peru: Lima clothing emporium to record over US$609 million in World Cup sales

08:00 | Lima, May. 31.

Sales of Gamarra Commerce Emporium —Lima's largest textile outlet— see an exceptional and unprecedented rise due to Peru's qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, said Susana Saldaña, secretary-general of the entrepreneurs' coordinating body.

Within this context, Gamarra is estimated to generate more than S/2 billion (about US$609 million) in Peru-inspired clothing sales.

"Never in the history of Gamarra have we sold so many garments with Peruvian designs such as national team jerseys, t-shirts, and caps, among others," she noted.

"The national team's ability to bring the Peruvian sentiment up to the surface has been surprising, even to us," Saldaña continued.

According to the entrepreneurs' representative, Peruvians used to look for jerseys of foreign teams, but now they are proud to purchase Peru's t-shirts and garments.

Gamarra managed to meet the strong demand from fans, she said. "That is the advantage of having a local clothing industry."

"All of a sudden we met our customers' expectations. No one can say they couldn't find t-shirts here or that Gamarra ran out of goods," she emphasized.
