U.S. Amb. highlights Peru's achievements in eradication of illegal coca crops

12:34 | Mazamari (Junin region), Dec. 16.

U.S. Ambassador to Peru Krishna R. Urs highlighted Peru's achievements after it exceeded its coca crop eradication goal for this year by destroying more than 25,500 ha of illegal plantations.

The Special Project for Control and Reduction of Illegal Crops in Alto Huallaga (CORAH) —with the support of Peru's National Police— has managed to eradicate 25,526 ha of illegal coca plantations, and the target was 25,000 ha, according to the Annual Plan for Reduction of Illegal Coca Growing Area.

According to the diplomat, the United States and Peru are allies and friends with a long history of collaborative work and the intent to continue doing so to combat the scourge of drugs.

The cooperation of the Government of the United States —through the U.S. Embassy's International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section (INL)— is strategic to fight drug trafficking.

The U.S Ambassador said the progress of Peru in reducing illegal coca plantations in Alto Huallaga Valley —located between Huanuco and San Martin regions— as well as successful operations in Monzon Valley, among others, are worth noting.

In addition, he believes that one of the reasons behind Peru's success over the last years is the commitment of the Government and its people.

Urs stressed the importance of having an integrated program of interdiction and alternative development, as these elements made it possible for Peru to succeed.
