United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix affirmed that Peru provides a professional and reliable service in the operations it conducts, as was the case with the contingent deployed to the Central African Republic.

In remarks to Andina news agency, the dignitary stated that the operations conducted in the African country were important for its population and took place in quite difficult and dangerous environments.

Lacroix —who had recently arrived in Peru to participate in the First Latin American and Caribbean Conference on Peacekeeping Operations— said it would be interesting to further develop the cooperation that exists with our country.

"And even consider other deployments of Peruvian units; I am very glad that there is an interest on the part of Peru to analyze what we can do and what is being done in the Central African Republic, as well as in other operations in which it participates," he added.

Moreover, the UN official indicated that Peru has been one of the contributors to peacekeeping operations for a long time, adding that its participation has so far been "of exceptional professionalism."

"I also believe that Peru's national experience serves to qualify this country for this type of initiatives; that grants a particular legitimacy to promote this type of cooperation in favor of peace in the Latin American and Caribbean sphere," he said.

Lastly, Lacroix argued that this Peruvian experience might be replicated in other continents and regions.
