Southern dismisses filing international lawsuit against Peru

13:37 | Lima, Feb. 4.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation does not plan to file any international lawsuit against the Peruvian State over the delay of the Arequipa-based Tia Maria mining project, its Chairman and Grupo Mexico CEO Oscar Gonzales Rocha affirmed on Tuesday.

"We don't have that in mind. However, if there were any other action that merited the filing of a lawsuit, we would analyze it. But now we don't have that intention," he stressed.

Speaking to the Red de Comunicacion Regional-RCR (Regional Communication Network), Gonzales Rocha confirmed that Southern Peru continues working in the Tambo Valley to develop the Tia Maria Project, since "its construction is already authorized."

"The (Peruvian) Government is interested in the presence of investment so that it can have higher incomes and boost the country's development. And the project will offer —in addition to more investment to the State— much more jobs to the population of Arequipa," he expressed.

Projects

The corporation's high-ranking officer said that the progress of the other projects developed by Southern Peru in the country have not been affected. These include Cuajone (Moquegua region), Los Chankas (Apurimac region), or Michiquillay (Cajamarca region).

"We continue investing because it is beneficial for the company to have more production, as was the case from 2018 to 2019, and we hope that will also be the case in 2020. Thus, our investments won't be affected. I hope they can reach —within what we have calculated— around S/8 billion (about US$2.371 billion) (...)," he noted.
