After arriving in Lima to take part in the unveiling of the countdown clock for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games, U.S. multiple Olympic gymnastics champion Simone Biles said she was thrilled and described it as "so nice to be in a beautiful country like Peru."
Biles was welcomed with honors on Monday night at Jorge Chavez International Airport. Upon arrival, fans applauded and cheered as she walked through the airport terminal.
In her first remarks, the athlete expressed her delight at being in Peru.
"I feel good. I'm really excited to be here," said the 29-year-old gymnast.
The athlete, who has won 41 medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships, also took the opportunity to invite fans to attend the One Year To Go Lima 2027 ceremony.
"Hi, everyone! It's so nice to be in your beautiful country. I can't wait to meet you all!" she said in a video.
The event—set to officially mark the start of the countdown to the Lima 2027 Pan American and Parapan American Games—will take place this Thursday, August 6, at Lima's Main Square.
As an official Panam Sports ambassador, Simone Biles will participate in a series of activities designed to leave a lasting impact on athletes and communities throughout Lima.
Travel to Machu Picchu
Biles will meet with young Peruvian gymnasts in what is expected to be an inspiring moment for the next generation of athletes.
Moreover, she will deliver a talk on mental health with Peruvian Olympic athletes, focusing on resilience and athletes' well-being.
Biles' itinerary will also include visits to some of Peru's most iconic landmarks, including the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
