We have every reason to be optimistic about future Russia-Peru relations, Director of the Latin American Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Alexander Shchetinin, has affirmed.

"We are going to continue working to strengthen the strategic partnership with Peru, which meets the fundamental interests of our countries and peoples," he said.

After noting that July 28 commemorated the Bicentennial of Peru's Independence, the Russian official congratulated President Pedro Castillo and Peruvians on this anniversary.

As he remarked, bilateral cooperation has reached a level of strategic partnership and keeps developing in a dynamic manner, so Peru is one of Russia's most important partners in Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region.

"We are firmly committed to further promoting the full range of our relations, including the reliable political dialogue," the head of the Latin American Department underlined.

Shchetinin emphasized that bilateral cooperation is based on the coincidence or similarity of positions on key issues in the international agenda, including the understanding of the need to strengthen multilateral approaches to global affairs.

Likewise, the Russian authority stressed the central and coordinating role of the UN, as well as the importance of joint efforts to counteract new threats and current challenges, such as terrorism and drug-trafficking.

"The cooperation in the fight against (the novel) coronavirus —one of the most complicated global challenges— is an eloquent testimony to the close ties between our countries amidst the difficult time that the world is currently going through," he added.
