President Vizcarra: Coronavirus cases rise to 950 in Peru

12:48 | Lima, Mar. 30.

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday afternoon confirmed that coronavirus (COVID-19) cases have increased to 950 in Peru —out of a total of 13,452 samples taken.

Among the confirmed cases, 238 citizens are hospitalized, including 49 in intensive care units and 37 connected to mechanical ventilation. 53 have been declared healthy and discharged from health facilities.

The regions registering new cases are: Lima, Arequipa, Ancash, Cusco, Ica, La Libertad, Loreto, and San Martin.

The top official specified that only patients referred by other medical centers will be admitted to the village.

After indicating that new confirmed cases will continue to appear, he requested the regions to work in coordination with the national government to adequately respond to this pandemic.

"As the Government, we will spare no effort to fight this disease," he promised.

First 15 days

The first tranche of the measures adopted by the Government —within the framework of the state of emergency— was completed today.

"These types of measures make the impacts diminish from the potential that existed in case we had not done anything at all (…)," he expressed.

The statesman revealed that when the initial measures were analyzed —prior to decreeing the state of emergency— the experts estimated that if nothing were done, the positive cases would have surpassed 5,000 by March 30.

"Peru registers close to 1,000 cases (950 cases); they stand at 20% of the projection in case we had not done anything; it is a clear proof that by working responsibly, with the support of all, we can reduce the trend (...)," he pointed out.

Event

Initially set to last from March 16 to 30, the measure has been extended thru April 12.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Monday marks the fifteenth day of mandatory social isolation.
