President Vizcarra: Coronavirus cases rise to 416 in Peru

13:01 | Lima, Mar. 24.

President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday afternoon confirmed that coronavirus (COVID-19) cases have increased to 416 in Peru —out of a total of 7,013 samples taken.

The Head of State noted that the percentage of positive cases —which stands at about 6%— is within the expected range.

Of the positive cases, he said, 23 citizens are hospitalized; 7 of them are currently at Health Ministry-run establishments, other 14 in EsSalud facilities, and 2 in private clinics.

Likewise, the top official indicated that 9 patients are in Intensive Care Units (ICU) connected to mechanical ventilation, 2 of them show a favorable evolution.

Moreover, the statesman confirmed that —between yesterday and today— 2 COVID-19 deaths were reported, despite the efforts undertaken by the health system. Thus, the death toll reaches 7.

As he noted, the increase in positive cases in certain regions coincides with the fact that their inhabitants ignore the compulsory social isolation currently underway.

Within this framework, the leader urged citizens to be disciplined and persevering in complying with the emergency measures decreed by the Government.

Remarks were made in a televised Address to the Nation, within the framework of a 15-day mandatory social isolation imposed to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers and other authorities. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Tuesday marks the ninth day of mandatory social isolation.
