President Vizcarra: Coronavirus cases rise to 395 in Peru

President Martin Vizcarra on Monday afternoon confirmed that coronavirus (COVID-19) cases have increased to 395 in Peru.

Within this framework, Lima hosts the majority of cases (307).

The Head of State specified that 7,486 tests have been conducted to date —of which 6,664 have definitive results.

Of this latter amount, 6,269 tested negative and 395 positive, which represented 6%. That is the average recorded since the beginning of the epidemic in the South American country.

Likewise, the top official explained that there are 17 hospitalized citizens —10 of them under normal conditions,

while 7 are in intensive care units connected to mechanical ventilation.

Moreover, the statesman warned that the regions with the highest incidence of coronavirus cases are located in the north of the country.

In this sense, Mr. Vizcarra specified that Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, and La Libertad concentrate a high rate of COVID-19 cases —after Lima. He indicated that the cause is a resistance —in those regions— to abide by the mandatory emergency measures decreed by the Executive Branch to stop this spread.

The President reiterated that the Ministry of Health carries out 500 daily tests, and that the projection is to carry out about 5,000 on a daily basis. He also ratified that the acquisition of 1.6 million tests is underway to meet this goal.

Remarks were made in a televised Address to the Nation, within the framework of a

15-day mandatory social isolation imposed by the administration to prevent the COVID-19 from further spreading in the South American country.

On this occasion, the President was joined by members of the Council of Ministers and other authorities. The event was held at the Government Palace in Lima.

Monday marks the eighth day of mandatory social isolation.

As is known, Mr. Vizcarra officially took office years ago on March 23, 2018, to replace resigning Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.
