The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday morning attended the Solemn Mass and Te Deum held on the occasion of Peru's 201st Independence Day celebrations.

The religious ceremony took place at the Cathedral Basilica of Lima.

The Head of State was accompanied by Ministers of State and the First Lady of the Nation.

Among the attendees were Congress Chairwoman Lady Camones and Judiciary Chairwoman Elvia Barrios, among other authorities.

Wearing the presidential sash, Mr. Castillo entered the temple accompanied by his wife and First Lady Lilia Paredes.

Minutes before this ceremony, as he was heading into the Cathedral, the top official was welcomed with the traditional 21-gun salute fired at Lima's Main Square.

Previously, the dignitary received the greetings from the Ministers of State at the Government Palace, as the first official activity on the occasion of the 201st Anniversary of Peru's Independence.

Te Deum

The Te Deum is an early Christian hymn of praise. The title is taken from its opening Latin words, rendered literally as "Thee, O God, we praise."

The hymn remains in regular use in the Catholic Church in the Office of Readings found in the Liturgy of the Hours, and in thanksgiving to God for a special blessing.
