Elvia Barrios was on Thursday elected as the new head of the Judicial Branch, thus becoming the first woman to hold this position in Peru.

The election was in charge of the Judicial Branch's Plenary Chamber.

On the occasion, she received 11 out of 15 votes.

Barrios —who will lead the Judiciary from 2021 to 2022— has been serving as Supreme Court Judge since 2011.

She also chaired the Gender Justice Commission, which was established in 2016.

In addition, she served as high-ranked member of the Superior Court of Justice of Ayacucho and chairwoman of the Corporate Criminal Chamber specialized in ordinary proceedings involving free inmates and linked to the Superior Court of Justice of Lima.
