Congresswoman Lady Camones (Alianza para el Progreso) was on Tuesday elected Chairwoman of Parliament for the 2022-2023 legislative period.

Thus, she will be joined by lawmakers Martha Moyano (Fuerza Popular), Digna Calle (Podemos Perú), and Wilmar Elera (Somos Perú) as Deputy Chairpersons.

Camones' List 1 obtained 73 votes, thus defeating Congressman Esdras Medina's List 3, which obtained 52 votes in the runoff.

Four parliamentarians voted null —out of a total of 129 lawmakers on this occasion.

List 3 had nominated Esdras Medina for the chairmanship. He had been joined by Waldemar Cerrón (Peru Libre), Ilich López (Acción Popular), and Katy Ugarte (Bloque Magisterial).

Both lists obtained most votes during the first round of this election. Thus, they moved on to second stage to define who would hold the Board of Chairpersons for the 2022-2023 period.

First round

During the first round, List 1 obtained 50 votes, while List 3 received 36 votes.

In turn, List 2 —headed by lawmaker Héctor Acuña— obtained 23 votes.

For its part, List 4 —led by Congresswoman Gladys Echaíz— received 16 votes.

Outgoing board

The new Board will replace the outgoing one (2021-2022) led by Maria del Carmen Alva (Acción Popular).

During that term, Alva had been joined by Lady Camones (Alianza para el Progreso), Enrique Wong (Podemos Perú), and Patricia Chirinos (Avanza País).
