Peru's national team supporters have been nominated in the best fans category at the Best FIFA Football Awards, the soccer governing body announced.

As is known, more than 40,000 Peruvian soccer fans traveled to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the team's first two defeats, the Inca country citizens' support for their national squad remained intact, both in the homeland and overseas.

Peruvians are regarded by many as the best fan group of the Russia World Cup tournament.

Within this framework, renowned Spanish actor Antonio Banderas said the national squad had one of the best fan bases ever seen in the mega event

Japan and Senegal fans —who cleaned up the stadiums after their teams' games— and Sebastian Carrera —a Chilean fan who had traveled 1,500 km to cheer on Puerto Montt— are the other nominees.

The corresponding ceremony will be held in London on September 24.

The voting poll will remain open until the same day of the awards show. Those interested in voting need to log on to FIFA.com.

Peruvian participation at World Cup

The national squad lost its first two matches against Denmark (0-1) and France (0-1), thus becoming the fourth team to depart from this event.

Nevertheless, it managed to claim three points by defeating Australian counterpart (2-0) in the last Group C game.
