Peruvian fans spent over US$200 million in Russia

10:43 | Lima, Jun. 29.

More than 40,000 Peruvian soccer fans —who traveled to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup— spent an average of US$5,000 per person during the national team's participation in the mega event, Peru's National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) informed.

"This is the major promotional effort Peruvians have made to put our country in the spotlight," Canatur Chairman Carlos Canales expressed.

"Fans deserve recognition from public and private sectors in gratitude for such tourism promotion," he added.

Within this context, Canales pointed out Peru is widely known not only for its impressive Inca citadel of Machu Picchu but also for its soccer supporters.

It must be noted Peruvians are regarded as the best fan base of this World Cup tournament according to a Eurosport survey.

"Unknowingly, fans have promoted Peru overseas to a level not seen before in recent decades, which was witnessed by millions of people," the representative remarked.

"This will translate into greater foreign tourists' presence in Peru," he concluded.
