Peruvian consulates overseas work to assist fellow citizens

09:18 | Lima, Mar. 19.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Peruvian consulates around the world are working tirelessly to cater to fellow citizens, mainly those who are stranded in countries most at risk from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

This includes the community of more than 3 million Peruvians living abroad, the compatriots who have been stranded due to the state of national emergency declared in the South American country, and those affected by the border closure.

Therefore, the said ministry mandated the personnel at Peruvian embassies to strengthen the consulates and stipulated an increase in the budget in order to assist more Peruvians.

In this sense, together with the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, airlines, embassies, and foreign consulates, it coordinates humanitarian flights —on an exceptional basis— to bring Peruvians and pick up foreign nationals —mainly tourists.

On the matter, it reported that —so far— there have been flights from Miami, Santiago, and Cancun. Likewise, more flights from other countries are expected to be confirmed in the coming days.

These flights will be exceptional and will prioritize Peruvians in a special situation of vulnerability, as well as those whose air tickets were scheduled for the days of the border closure.
