Piura University's Edificio E (Building E) in Peru has been announced as the winner of the 2018 Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP).

The award was granted by Illinois Institute of Technology's College of Architecture in Chicago, United States.

The architectural project was designed by Lima-based Barclay & Crousse Architecture, founded by Peruvians Sandra Barclay and Jean Pierre Crousse.

The other five finalists were True North, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (United States), Teopanzolco Cultural Center (Mexico), as well as IMS Paulista and SESC 24 de Maio (Brazil).

Edificio E

The building sits in a huge campus located at the edge of Piura, a city built in a natural oasis of the Peruvian Northern desert.

The project stands as a new educational typology created under four main concerns: a new learning landscape, sense of community, the building as a campus, as well as space and climate.

About the Prize

The MCHAP —founded in 2012— is a biennial award recognizing excellence in built works of architecture in the Americas.
