The President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, and his Brazilian counterpart, Jair Bolsonaro, on Thursday signed health agreements, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote cooperation between the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) and the Ministry of Health of the Federative Republic of Brazil.

The agreement implies a series of joint actions in order to strengthen the health services provided by both countries.

In this way, EsSalud and the Brazilian Ministry of Health will exchange information on the social health security policy; decentralization of health management; medicine policy and the functioning of information systems at health facilities; as well as financial regulation of health services and human resource training in health.

In addition, they will share knowledge about primary health care; prevention and treatment of cancer; as well as training of health professionals who perform organ, tissue and cell transplantation.

Another aspect of the MoU that must be stressed is the fact that EsSalud and the Brazilian Ministry of Health will exchange information and experiences on strategies to promote the vaccination against diseases such as COVID-19 in their respective countries.

Castillo and Bolsonaro held a meeting in the city of Porto Velho, Rondonia State, to discuss topics of bilateral interest, such as multimodal connection, trade and access to markets, border cooperation in defense, security, as well as technical and humanitarian aspects, and to face the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the first meeting held between presidents of Peru and Brazil in nine years.

Brazil is Peru's first trading partner in the region, with which it shares a 2,822-kilometer Amazonian border.
