Peruvian and Ecuadorian police agents investigated for ammunition trafficking

12:17 | Tumbes (Tumbes region), Nov. 25.

As a result of an operation carried out by agents of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) Special Brigade against Crime, authorities uncovered the existence of an alleged gang dedicated to ammunition trafficking between Peru and Ecuador, reportedly led by police members from both countries.

A total of 2,900 rounds of ammunition were found in a parcel intercepted in the border district of Aguas Verdes.

This occurred as part of an operation carried out under the state of emergency and actions aimed at combating and preventing acts of extortion, contract killings, and robberies in the border province of Zarumilla.

The PNP reported that this took place during an intervention at the cargo transport company Flores Hermanos, based in Aguas Verdes. The parcel in question originated in Lima and was headed to Tumbes.

Inside the parcel was a water pump containing 2,949 rounds of 9×19 mm ammunition of various brands.

They lacked documentation proving their legal origin and were therefore immediately seized.

The case was referred to the Second Provincial Criminal Prosecutor's Office in Zarumilla.

The seized items were transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division (Divincri) facilities in Tumbes for the corresponding investigation.

This operation prevented the shipment of this consignment, which was headed to Tumbes as a parcel and, according to initial investigations, allegedly involves an active Peruvian police agent and an Ecuadorian police colonel as the intended recipient.

The organization has been identified as "Los Foraneos de Aguas Verdes" (The Foreigners of Agua Verde) allegedly involved in crimes against public safety, specifically the manufacture, sale, as well as use of firearms and ammunition.

Among the documents found was a waybill registered in the name of a Peruvian National Police (PNP) lieutenant, currently in active service, who is believed to be the sender of the shipment.

The recipient is listed as a Colonel of the General Staff of the National Police of the Republic of Ecuador.
