Peru's Ubinas Volcano: State of emergency declared in some Moquegua districts

The Executive Branch has declared a state of emergency in some districts of Peru's southern Moquegua region due to imminent danger from the eruptive process of Ubinas Volcano, which is located in General Sanchez Cerro province.

The decision was adopted during a session of the Council of Ministers held at the Government Palace in the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Wednesday.

This measure will allow the execution of exceptional, immediate, and necessary measures plus actions to reduce the existing risk, in addition to response and rehabilitation interventions, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers indicated via Twitter.

The Executive Branch and technical entities permanently monitor volcanological activity.

Multisectoral teams coordinate with authorities the volcano's situation to assist Moquegua region families.


According to the Geological, Mining, and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet), the explosion took place at 3:17 a.m. (local time) and was followed by the emission of ash, which rose up to 5,500 meters above crater.

Update at 9:48 p.m. (local time): The Executive Branch has declared the districts of Coalaque, Chojata, Ichuña, Lloque, Matalaque, Ubinas, and Yunga, located in General Sanchez Cerro province (Moquegua region), in state of emergency due to imminent danger from Ubinas Volcano's eruptive process.
