Ubinas Volcano, located in Peru's southern region of Moquegua, produced a strong explosion 5,500 meters above the crater's floor in the early hours of Tuesday.

The event was accompanied by the emission of ash, which can be seen various kilometers apart and is expected to reach various towns throughout the regions of Moquegua and Arequipa.

According to the Geological, Mining, and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet), the explosion took place at 3:17 a.m. (local time) and was followed by the emission of ash, which rose up to 5,500 meters above crater.

Peru's geological agency confirmed that the spreading of this ash cloud will affect several towns in Ubinas Valley.

Furthermore, the institute said that Ubinas Volcano is experiencing internal activity associated with the presence of fluids and fractures.

"Incandescence was visible during the explosion," it stated.

Ingemmet affirmed that the ash cloud is moving to the south and southwest, affecting towns in Ubinas Valley, which are located along the way: Querapi, Ubinas, Sacohaya, Anascapa, San Miguel, Tonohaya, Huatahua, Huarina, Escacha, and Matalaque.

In addition, the ash is expected to reach the district of San Juan de Tarucani, located in Arequipa province.

Therefore, Regional Health Management Office (Geresa) authorities declared a red alert at four healthcare centers and reported that it will continue to provide face masks to inhabitants for their protection.
