Peru’s Diego Rodriguez Egocheaga, 18, won the South American table tennis tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina after victory over Ecuadorian opponent Alberto Miño.

It is worth mentioning the young Peruvian athlete managed to defeat older and more experienced players.

In the round of 16, Rodriguez beat Argentinean Gaston Alto 4-1. In the semifinals, he overcame Diego Temperley 4-2, also from Argentina, and he won the final against Miño 4-0.

The Peruvian representative takes three medals in total: 1 team bronze, 1 individual bronze and 1 individual gold.

Rodriguez Egocheaga was introduced to table tennis when he was 9 years and was trained by Olympic-caliber table tennis player and coach, Marisol Espineira, who guided him until he turned 16, when he traveled to Germany to keep on training.

Since then, Diego has trained and played in the German table tennis league thanks to the support of his parents.

It should be noted he has participated in the 2013 Bolivarian Games held in Lima, where he won the bronze medal with his team.
