Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Elizabeth Astete on Wednesday ratified her portfolio's commitment to continue working on the elimination of all forms of violence against women, adolescents, and girls.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the high-ranking official said that this date means an opportunity to reflect on this serious global problem and the importance of building a future without violence.

"Violence against women is an obstacle to the achievement of equality, development, and peace, which affects (women) in various ways. This includes physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence. We all have the obligation to add efforts towards the goal of (shaping) a world free of gender violence," she expressed.

The Cabinet member highlighted the permanent protection and assistance efforts undertaken by consulates for the sake of Peruvian victims of violence and human trafficking overseas.

Likewise, the high-ranking official highlighted the international cooperation geared towards fighting violence, as well as Peru's active participation —at the multilateral level— to move the gender agenda forward and eradicate violence against female citizens.

At the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Astete said, there is a zero tolerance policy on violence against women, but there is a commitment to build and maintain a safe work environment, thus guaranteeing full respect for human rights.

"On this day, I wish to reaffirm the institutional commitment to continue working on the elimination of all forms of violence against women, adolescents, and girls, which also affect Peruvian nationals abroad," she added.

According to the diplomat, the objective is to ensure the full development of women in light of national legislation and international obligations assumed as well as expressed in the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

"Let's work together to achieve this goal," she concluded.
