The
President of the Republic, Jose Maria Balcazar, stated that the Government has been responding immediately to the earthquakes that struck Junin region by sending humanitarian aid and coordinating with regional authorities to assist affected families.
"Rest assured that we are acting swiftly. The aid is already in the hands of the authorities in Junin and the Government. We will prepare a list to provide relief to the affected families and deliver the immediate assistance they need," he told Radio Nacional on Sunday.
The Head of State said Cabinet Chief Luis Arroyo and Defense Minister Amadeo Flores traveled to the region to coordinate the distribution of blankets, tents, and food for the affected population.
The earthquake has left at least five people dead and many others injured.
The Head of State said that, according to the preliminary report received by the Executive Branch, the area hardest hit by the earthquake was the lower part of Chongos, in Chupaca province.
"That is why our response and the delivery of aid have been immediate. We are coordinating with Junin Region Government to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches the people affected by this disaster in an orderly manner," he stated.
The top official announced that he will travel to the affected area after receiving a first-hand report from the authorities deployed in Junin.
The report will help determine the population's needs and enable the Government to adopt additional measures to accelerate the response.
"The important thing is to know what kind of assistance the affected families need. I want to receive the report first-hand so that I can take further action," he pointed out.
President Balcazar also announced that the Government will issue an urgency decree in the coming days to target resources and provide a more effective response to the damage that a strong El Niño phenomenon could cause.
Measures
In an interview with Radio Nacional, the president announced that the Government is preparing an urgency decree for Chupaca province, Junin region, to address the aftermath of the earthquake. The decree is expected to be published by Monday.
"If necessary, we will issue an urgency decree. (...) We will most likely publish the urgency decree tonight or early tomorrow morning. It will enable us to provide more effective assistance," Balcazar noted.
He added that it will help "target resources so we can provide the assistance needed to repair infrastructure and buildings that may have been damaged."
Junin Region Governor Zosimo Cardenas also updated Cabinet Chief Luis Enrique Arroyo and Defense Minister Amadeo Flores on the latest emergency report following the earthquake that struck Saturday night. It has preliminarily left five people dead, 32 injured, and 250 families displaced.
