Peru and Chile held the 14th meeting of the Political Consultation and Coordination Mechanism in Lima. The delegations were led by Peru’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Eric Anderson Machado, and Chile’s Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Patricio Torres Espinosa.

Both officials underscored the importance of holding a Presidential Meeting and the 5th Peru-Chile Binational Cabinet during the first half of 2027, which will provide an opportunity to renew and adopt concrete commitments in priority areas of common interest.

During the meeting, the delegations agreed on the need to intensify joint efforts to combat transnational organized crime and irregular migration.

Furthermore, they highlighted the value of resuming inter-institutional coordination for the 3rd Security Meeting between the Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the Interior of Peru and Chile, and of continuing the work of the Binational Committee on Migration Cooperation—with a focus on information exchange and the coordination of police actions at the border.

Regarding the border area, the need to modernize the Santa Rosa and Chacalluta border complexes was emphasized, with the goal of streamlining the flow of people and cargo between Tacna and Arica.

Likewise, the importance of continuing to advance the implementation of the "Traffic Light" (Semáforo) system for integrated control at both complexes was noted.

In the area of ??disaster risk management, Peru expressed its gratitude to the Government of Chile for its cooperation in providing a helicopter, equipment, and technical personnel to help address the severe forest fires affecting various parts of the country.

Furthermore, the delegations highlighted their interest in entering into agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation on disaster risk management and reduction, given the current emergency context surrounding the El Niño phenomenon.

They also noted the positive state of the bilateral economic and commercial relationship, in the context of the twentieth anniversary of the Free Trade Agreement between Peru and Chile.

This instrument has helped consolidate a framework of stability and legal certainty for the development of economic ties between the two countries.

Likewise, the deputy ministers expressed their satisfaction with the reactivation of the Peruvian-Chilean Business Council and the participation of the leaders of both countries in its last two meetings—a demonstration of a high-level commitment to strengthening bilateral economic and commercial ties.

Finally, they reaffirmed their commitment to promoting concrete initiatives that foster the development of border areas and the well-being of their inhabitants. In this regard, they underscored the importance of resuming the assessment of draft bilateral migration agreements concerning residents of border areas and temporary workers.
