Peru's President supervises expansion works at Jorge Chavez Int'l Airport

09:59 | Lima, Jul. 23.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday morning monitored modernization and expansion works at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport.

During his visit, the Head of State was joined by Transport and Communications Minister Carlos Estremadoyro.

The Jorge Chavez Airport Expansion Project was part of the Phase 1 of the Economic Reactivation launched by the Government, given the priority it deserves in the country.

The project entails an investment of around US$1.5 billion, which involves the implementation of all works associated with the construction of the new air traffic control tower and second runway, as well as the new passenger terminal.

The awarding of the new air traffic control tower marks a major milestone for the project. It will be the first tower capable of operating two runways simultaneously in the country, and will be operational in 2022.

"The second runway must be completed by 2022, but a new (air traffic) control tower is needed to operate. The second runway is not intended to be an alternative (to the first one), both must be used simultaneously," Peru's top official stated.

With this expansion, Jorge Chavez International Airport will be one of the main engines of the Peruvian economy in the coming years.
