Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday affirmed that he was requested to postpone the general elections by members of Accion Popular (AP) and Alianza Para el Progreso (APP) parties.

"The request to postpone the elections was made by a member of Accion Popular and Alianza Para el Progreso, but on the best terms," he told Santa Rosa radio station.

According to the Head of State, these talks took place during the pandemic, when the infection and death figures were going up. However, he remarked that now the situation is different, and the figures have decreased significantly.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that both political parties voted against the presidential impeachment motion presented by Union por el Peru party.

The statesman noted that his relationship with the Legislative Branch has not been good since he took office, and that "the economic-political status quo" changed since he took up the Presidency of the Republic.

He went on to say that, in the political realm, political reforms were implemented, which generated consequences in parties that were part of the "long-established and old politics" of Peru.

Additionally, he underlined that various reforms that changed the economic scheme were undertaken in his administration, such as the anti-tax evasion law, the antitrust law, as well as the food-labeling law.

In this sense, he said there are economic and political powerful groups whose interest have been affected and intend to oust him from the Presidency of the Republic.

The Peruvian leader reiterated that he will fulfill his commitment to holding general elections in April next year, noting that there is no reason to postpone them.
