The
President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Monday said that the priority is to save the lives of people and take them to safety after the damage left by the strong quake that struck the region of Amazonas on Sunday.
On the second day of his tour to quake-affected areas, the Head of State called on citizens to come to grips with this risk situation they are facing with a great sense of responsibility.
"The whole area is totally collapsed (...). If you do not evacuate, terrible consequences will follow," he said in remarks delivered from a highly damaged road section of the Fernando Belaunde highway.
Under this premise, the President asked Amazonas region's governor and local authorities to work on the evacuation together with the Armed Forces.
Additionally, the dignitary announced that the Government will provide tents and food to the affected population requiring relocation.
"We are going to act immediately," the Head of State said, after noting that the possibility of implementing an airlift to evacuate people is being explored.
The seismic event occurred at 05:52 a.m. (local time) at a depth of 131 km and its epicenter was located 98 km east of the town of Santa Maria de Nieva, in Nieva district (Condorcanqui province), near the border with Ecuador.
In addition, due to its large magnitude, it was also felt in Peruvian capital Lima and various cities across the country.
