The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo announced that Peru has asked the Organization of American States (OAS) to activate the Inter-American Democratic Charter, since he warned the international community that there is a process intended to break the constitutional order in the country.

"My government has requested the OAS to activate and apply the Inter-American Democratic Charter so as to initiate a consultation process involving all political forces, branches of State, and social forces, in order to find —along with the good offices of the international community— a way to prevent a serious disturbance of the democratic order in Peru," he said.

Remarks were made in a televised Address to the Nation on Wednesday night.

The Head of State pointed out that he resorts to the Inter-American Democratic Charter, especially to Articles 17 and 18, as a preventive mechanism for the defense of democracy and to avoid constitutional breakdown in the country.

In this context, the dignitary stressed that the complaint filed against him by Attorney General Patricia Benavides before Congress is unconstitutional, illegal, unfounded, and lacks adequate substantiation, as well as objective evidence.

Moreover, the top official warned about the astonishing speed in filing the complaint and the open exhortation of the magistrate to Parliament by saying in her message that she has already fulfilled her duty and that now it is up to Congress to do its job which —he said— reveals the not-so-subtle arrangement for the anti-democratic plot.

"I must denounce, before the country and the international community, that this practice of breaking the constitutional and democratic order, that the political forces that plunged the country into the largest process of corruption in national history in the 1990s are the ones that are now driving a new form of coup d'état," he said.

The President remarked that, in our country, various legal instruments have been used improperly by the prosecutor's office, with the complicity of some magistrates, against him and the members of his government.

In this regard, Mr. Castillo affirmed that the true purpose is the political persecution, which began even before he assumed the administration of the State.
