participated on Tuesday in the high-level "Shield of the Americas" meeting, attended by United States President Donald Trump, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session.
The event was inaugurated by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
It brought together the heads of delegation of participating countries to examine cooperation measures aimed at addressing transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, and illicit economies.
During the meeting, Rubio told President Trump about Peru and Colombia's recent entry into the multinational coalition, and the Secretary of State gave President Fujimori the floor.
The President then stated that Peru is joining the multinational coalition with great determination and enthusiasm, which aims to unite efforts to combat transnational criminal organizations.
"President Trump, Secretary Rubio, thank you so much. Peru joins the Shield of the Americas with great determination and great enthusiasm. I come from Peru. Peru has defeated two terrorist groups, the Shining Path and MRTA," Fujimori stated.
"But right now we have a different type of problem. This crime that we are facing doesn't respect frontiers. That's why we are very happy to join this coalition. We applaud your leadership and your initiative, President Trump. We are here to support the group and to receive also the information and support from all of you. Thank you so much," she added.
In turn, President Donald Trump emphasized that the only way to combat crime is with firmness.
International cooperation to address transnational crime
The Peruvian President reaffirmed her country's commitment to international cooperation to address transnational organized crime.
Furthermore, the Head of State underscored the need to strengthen coordination among countries to confront a threat that transcends borders.
Moreover, the top official stated that the "Shield of the Americas" should become a practical instrument aimed at strengthening national capacities and generating concrete results for citizens.
In this regard, she stressed that sustainable security also requires promoting formal employment, investment, and greater development opportunities for the population.
