Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Monday congratulated Luis Arce for his election as President of Bolivia and extended his best wishes to the new administration.

Via Twitter, the Head of State expressed the willingness of the Peruvian Government to strengthen ties with Bolivia, for the welfare of the peoples of the two countries.

"On behalf of the Peruvian Government, I congratulate Luis Arce for his election as President of Bolivia and I wish him success in his administration," the statesman said.

"I express the willingness to continue strengthening our historic relations of brotherhood and cooperation for the well-being of both peoples," he added.

Various exit polls show a victory in the first round for Arce —a candidate of the Movement to Socialism party (MAS)— with 52.4% of votes, over the 31.5% for Mesa of the centrist Citizens' Community alliance.

Bolivia headed to the polls last Sunday with the challenge of electing a new President of the Republic and, thereby, reestablishing institutional normality after the resignation and exile of Evo Morales, a year ago.
