The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti affirmed that the nations' Independence Bicentennial, which is commemorated this year, constitutes an occasion to renew the vocation for service.

"The Bicentennial should not be considered just a celebration; it is an occasion to rethink and renew the vocation for service that different generations throughout history have had," he stated.

During his virtual participation in the first edition of Cabildos Bicentenario, the Head of State said it is essential to take into account the new challenges of this stage —such as the global crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change.

In the next 20 or 30 years, he noted, today's young people will live in a world very different from the current one, and they will have to make difficult decisions —on which humanity will surely depend.

Under this premise, the top official reiterated that the Bicentennial represents an occasion for young citizens to renew their vocation for service, which means actively participating in politics.

"From the protest, the disagreement, and social networks, we have to move on to real political action," Mr. Sagasti expressed, calling on youth not to take too much time in getting involved in this issue.

He also noted that the Bicentennial comes at a difficult time, with demands to be met that had accumulated for years and have exploded in recent months, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic.
