President Francisco Sagasti on Saturday announced that, in order to mitigate climate change, Peru will increase its emissions reduction ambition from 30% to 40% by 2030 —a commitment that will be reflected in the update of nationally determined contributions.

During his virtual participation in the UN-sponsored Climate Ambition Summit 2020, the Head of State indicated that the South American country joins this way the call of nations around the world.

Likewise, the top official pointed out that —in terms of adaptation— Peru will complete the preparation of its National Adaptation Plan.

"Finally, we will complete the update of the National Strategy for Climate Change by 2050, which will define Peru's progressive transition towards carbon neutrality, with a strong focus on environmental justice," he expressed.

Challenge

Furthermore, the statesman assured that —given its condition of megadiverse country— Peru's climate posed great challenges "that forced us to deploy our best capacities and creativity" throughout history.

"Our commitment, a few months before celebrating 200 years of republican life, is to rediscover that ancestral spirit and lay the foundations for climate action that allows us to move forward towards sustainable development and achieve well-being," he said.

The top official also pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts captured people's attention in recent times, being —without any doubt— "the most pressing threat facing the world."

"But let's not be wrong. The climate crisis remains the greatest risk to development that human beings face nowadays. We have an accelerated catastrophe, which is COVID-19, and a catastrophe in not so slow motion, which is climate change," he added.

Therefore, Mr. Sagasti argued that —at this summit celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Paris Agreement signing— Peru "wishes to reaffirm its commitment to the common objective of facing climate change, recognizing that —without science and technology— there is no future and there is no way to face it."
