Peru's PM urges citizens not to lower guard against COVID-19

10:00 | Lima, Nov. 20.

Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Friday affirmed that Peruvians must not lower their guard against the COVID-19 pandemic.

In remarks to America Television channel, she said that although COVID-19 death figures have dropped in Peru, it is necessary to remain alert about this lethal virus while learning more about it as days go by.

"The message we want to convey is that we must not lower our guard, we must learn to live —in a safe way— with a virus that will be with us for the shortest possible time, as we hope," she stated.

Bermudez remarked that a lot of hard work is done to be on the front row when the vaccines become available.

According to the high-ranking official, political crises have effects on the State administration, because the lack of continuity of authorities paralyzes everything and, as a result, there is no one to validate authorizations.

Therefore, an emergency meeting will be held to address the health and vaccine issues, instead of waiting until next week.

The Prime Minister recalled that, according to the National Vaccination Plan against COVID-19, the aim is to immunize more than 22 million Peruvians over 18 years of age.

"The good thing is that a strategy has been outlined, so we have to implement it as soon as possible, following the administrative procedures to guarantee an effective intervention," she explained.

The Cabinet chief confirmed that the first Council of Ministers session will be held today to address pending issues and that regular meetings will be held starting next week.

One of the topics to be discussed, she said, has to do with the Sunday ban on private vehicles, as there is a lot of expectation on this matter.
