Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Sunday affirmed that the Government is increasing the capacity of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds in light of the rise of COVID-19 cases in the country.
"40 ICU beds have been added over the past week, and we are considering acquiring a similar number in the coming weeks but also setting up medical teams that will be responsible for providing care," she told RPP radio and TV station.
The Cabinet chief explained that people with chronic diseases who reach hospitals with advanced infection status occupy an ICU bed between four and six months and that, currently, there are 700 people under such condition.
"The availability of these beds does not change. Hence the importance of avoiding a critical situation," she indicated.
In this sense, Bermudez asked the population to understand that the pandemic has not ended yet, not to relax preventive measures, and to seek medical help as the first warning signs emerge so as to avoid complications.
Additionally, she disclosed the resumption of
Tayta Operation, which reaches places with a high risk of infection, adding that antigenic tests are expected to arrive so that people can undergo the tests free of charge and strengthen prevention care.
According to Bermudez, the measures adopted by the Government such as the restriction of flights, access to beaches, and
resumption of activities at casinos and gyms are under permanent evaluation and can be reversed if necessary.
"We are open to any measure that may ensure the health of citizens. The important thing is to face and adopt measures based on evidence. We are in constant communication with neighboring countries to see the measures and have actions of reciprocity," she pointed out.
