Peru's former President Alejandro Toledo on Saturday began the journey that will bring him back to Peru to be tried for the bribery crimes he is accused of, which are linked to the Interoceanic Highway implementation.

During the afternoon, the former top official boarded a Delta Air Lines flight at San Francisco International Airport to transport him first to LAX —the main air terminal in Los Angeles.

From there, Toledo will board another aircraft, which will transport him to Jorge Chavez International Airport in Peru.

The former Head of State arrived at the San Francisco airport on a wheelchair carried by a U.S. marshal in civilian clothes.

In addition to wearing a green jacket, similar to the one that characterized him during the 2000 presidential campaign, Toledo appeared unkempt and covering his hands with a blanket.

The 77-year-old is expected to land in Peru on Sunday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. (local time).

Former President Alejandro Toledo turned himself in to U.S. authorities on Friday morning to start the process of extradition to Peru where he is wanted by justice over corruption crimes.

Alejandro Toledo —who resided in the U.S.— is being investigated by the Peruvian justice for having allegedly received a bribe worth US$35 million from Brazilian construction companies to favor them in the bidding for the South Interoceanic Highway, while he was President of the Republic (2001-2006).
