Peru's Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Sunday affirmed that all citizens must understand that the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing in the country.

In statements to RPP radio and TV station, the Cabinet chief stressed the need to attend a health care center as the first warning signs emerge in order to be guided on care, instead of reaching the point of needing an ICU bed.

"The first aspect we want to strengthen at this stage —in addition to direct care to meet logistical needs— is preventive action," she stated.

Therefore, she said, the Government is promoting campaigns such as the Tayta Program, with the support of the Armed Forces.

"The Ministry of Health (Minsa) is working closely with Regional Health Directorates at Regional Governments and directly —along with the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud)— with hospitals," she pointed out.

According to Bermudez, Minsa has acquired an important number of oximeters to be distributed in coordination with regional and local governments, so that they can become available at health care centers and in other key places such as social organizations.

She went on to say that infection places are those that draw large crowds. Hence the need to avoid gatherings and maintain physical distance.
