Peru's Machu Picchu: New access routes to be available starting next year

11:29 | Cusco (Cusco region), May. 2.

The works to build alternative access routes to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu —Peru's most famous destination— are to be started in 2020 and will contribute to the development of new tourist attractions.

One of the routes to be implemented is the Amazon access, which will integrate the Intihuatana community with all sectors in San Miguel, Inkarakay, Mandor, Puente Ruinas up to Machu Picchu Town.

The second travel corridor will connect Choquellusca —located on the border with Piscacucho, in Ollantaytambo district— with San Antonio de Torontoy, on the way to Machu Picchu.

The projects —intended to highlight the cultural, natural, and social heritage, diversify tourist attractions, and invigorate the local economy— were passed at the last Machu Picchu council meeting.

The thousands of tourists who crowd the archaeological park will now be able to take further advantage of their visit to Machu Picchu.

The Machu Picchu District Municipality plans to improve paths for pedestrians, with the expansion, cleanliness, and clearance of pathways, as well as to build rest stops and viewpoints.

Other projects will involve the construction of interpretation centers, information booths, restrooms, and the placement of garbage cans for solid and organic waste.

Additionally, gardens with native plants will be found along the paths and other areas will be reforested.

On the other hand, community members will attend training and awareness sessions on environment-related issues.

Finally, biodiversity will be assessed based on climate changes, among other things.

The budget for these projects is S/4 million (about US$1.2 million).
