President Keiko Fujimori's Government has strengthened Peruvian National Police operations in Trujillo and announced that actions will be taken alongside the Armed Forces in response to the events that occurred in the northern city.
Cabinet Chief Luis Galarreta announced these measures during a statement at the Government Palace, accompanied by Ministers Rafael Belaunde (Defense) and Cesar Astudillo (Interior).
"This situation is unacceptable, and we reject this violence. The National Police are carrying out various operations. The Defense Minister will travel to La Libertad region; there, he will provide information about the actions that will be carried out alongside the Armed Forces," he stated.
Galarreta indicated that the Executive Branch will remain attentive to the reports issued by the authorities and will continue working to identify the ringleaders linked to those events.
"We will await the reports available later tonight and tomorrow morning. We will also determine which individuals have been identified as the ringleaders behind this unfortunate situation," he said.
The high-ranking official emphasized that President Fujimori's Government will not back down in the fight against crime.
Similarly, he announced that new measures are being evaluated to strengthen the Peruvian State's response capacity.
"This is a message to these criminals: we, as a State, will not stop confronting them. Along the way, we have been considering various actions that we will surely implement soon," he expressed.
Legislative powers
In this context, the Prime Minister stressed the urgency of the Congress of the Republic addressing the Government's request for the delegation of legislative powers, particularly regarding citizen security.
He explained that one of the objectives is to strengthen intelligence capabilities to detect criminal organizations in advance and provide the National Police with additional tools.
"It is extremely important for our intelligence service to have capabilities it currently lacks in order to detect these criminal gangs in time. Ultimately, there is violence in the city, and that is what we want to stop," Galarreta stated.
Likewise, the Cabinet chief indicated that the Executive Branch seeks to establish mechanisms that will expand its capacity to act against criminal organizations and strengthen the Armed Forces' participation where appropriate.
"It is also important to identify and designate groups that are hostile to these criminal gangs so that our Armed Forces can take action against them," Galarreta indicated.
Finally, the Cabinet Chief added that the legislative powers delegation includes measures related to security around prison facilities and the National Police's access to intelligence information.
"The delegation of legislative powers has several important aspects, particularly regarding citizen security, which can provide us with the tools to establish positions around prison facilities and enable the Police to access classified information from our intelligence services," he pointed out.
