The international magazine The Banker, from the Financial Times publishing group, has chosen Peru's Central Reserve Bank (BCR) Governor Julio Velarde as the
Central Banker of the Year 2020 for the Americas.
The Banker's Central Banker of the Year 2020 awards celebrate the officials that have best managed to stimulate growth and stabilize their economy.
The Banker highlighted Velarde's work amid political spats, as well as international and local tensions.
"Despite this climate, financial stability was maintained. Much of this was thanks to the experienced oversight of Peru's central bank governor, Julio Velarde, who has been at the helm of the monetary institution for more than 13 years. Mr. Velarde helped keep Peru on track," the magazine said.
Velarde, who has held the role of chief of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru since 2006, promotes the adoption of preventive and innovative measures —over the past years— to tackle the crisis and financial volatility at a global level.
In 2012, he was given the Distinguished Service of the Year prize conferred by LatinTrade at the BRAVO Business Awards.
In addition, he was named the Emerging Markets' Central Bank Governor of the Year for Latin America in 2010.
