The government maintains an investment portfolio of about S/.1.8 billion (about US$566 million) for various projects and services in favor of those living in the Apurimac, Ene and Mantaro River Valleys, or VRAEM, which will improve the living conditions in this area of the country.

Announcement was made by Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Juan Manuel Benites, who is travelling to Pichari -an area located in La Convencion province in Cusco- to meet with agricultural producers and local governments’ representatives in order to explore productive reconversion topics in depth.

Coordination is being made with other sectors to have important infrastructure such as the Quinua-San Francisco road and a road linking Satipo with Pichari, which will take more local products out of the region.

“Health and education issues are also addressed. A US$566 million portfolio has been allocated to the Vraem region, which includes completed projects and those still to be completed. Everything must be quite clear, and there is enormous concern on how to improve the population’s quality of life and access to public services,” he said.

The area can now develop peacefully thanks to state presence through public services, and the agriculture sector can improve residents' livelihoods.

The Agriculture Minister emphasized that efforts to increase land productivity include conversion of 60,000 and 40,000 hectares to coffee and cocoa crop production, respectively.

“These crops have a route and are already being exported; we have reported an expansion of hectares through the productive reconversion program in order to improve their income and provide them an adequate livelihood,” he underlined.
