Peru's Foreign Trade Min: Agro-exports and tourism are engines of economy

10:20 | Lima, Aug. 4.

Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez has affirmed that the Government intends to turn agro-exports and tourism into important engines of the Peruvian economy.

In this sense, the Mincetur head affirmed that Peru's foreign trade will be boosted by making the most of the Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and coordinating with other sectors —such as Agriculture and Transportation— to increase national exports.

Likewise, an approach of inclusion, added value, and associativity will be boosted so that small producers can benefit from the dynamics of exports.

"This boost to local economies will promote the articulation of small producers with medium and large companies, as well as technology transfer, so that they can trade directly abroad," he said.

Concerning tourism, Minister Sanchez will lead the economic reactivation of this sector in the country's northern area, which has important destinations such as the Moche Route.

"The great challenge is to diversify the tourist offer towards destinations that already have (received) the Safe Travels stamp, such as Pacasmayo, Puerto Malabrigo, Guañape Islands, and Huamachuco, among others," he indicated.

It must be noted that Mincetur will boost immediate measures to counter unemployment in the sector, such as the hiring of tourist guides, the promotion of reimbursable and non-reimbursable funds for tourism service providers, as well as the use of programs and initiatives coming from other sectors.

Therefore, the minister pledged to increase public spending on tourism, through a fund of S/500 million (US$123.1 million) and the leverage of financial resources with the private sector.

Remarks were made on Tuesday after arriving in northern La Libertad region, where he fulfilled a series of activities and held meetings joined by Governor Manuel Llempen.
