The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its strong rejection of the statements recently issued by Presidents Gustavo Petro (Colombia) and Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (Mexico), regarding internal affairs of Peru.

On Monday, the Foreign Affairs sector's head, Ana Cecilia Gervasi, issued a statement in which she criticized the fact that said Heads of State insist in not recognizing the mandate of President Dina Boluarte, who assumed the Presidency of Peru via constitutional succession.

Therefore, the Peruvian government agency described such statements as interventionist, irresponsible, and ideological.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru expresses its most categorical rejection of the recent and reiterated interventionist, irresponsible, and ideological statements issued by Mr. Petro of Colombia and Mr. Lopez of Mexico, who insist in not recognizing the coup d'état perpetrated by ex-President Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022, as well as the legitimate and constitutional succession of the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte Zegarra, which has been widely recognized by the international community," she said.

Minister Gervasi indicated that the stance of both presidents is contrary to the principles of the democratic coexistence in the region and emphasized that the defense of democracy is an obligation binding on all States.

Pacific Alliance

On the other hand, the Peruvian minister stated that the stance of Lopez Obrador, who insists in not handing over the Pro-Tempore Presidency of the Pacific Alliance to Peru, affects the most successful integration process of recent times and the needs of his population.

On Monday, in his usual morning press conference, the Mexican President affirmed that he will not pass the baton to Peru to lead such mechanism, claiming that the mandate of President Dina Boluarte has no legitimacy.

"The arguments put forth today (Monday, May 15) by Mr. Lopez for not handing over the Presidency of the Pacific Alliance, which falls to our country, show recklessness and a biased view, which are not consistent with the recognition of the constitutional mandate of the President of the Republic, ratified by the international community as a whole," Gervasi remarked.
