The Armed Forces will support the "
Monitoring for Health in 2020" plan by complementing the work carried out by inspectors from municipalities and the Peruvian National Police, Defense Minister Jorge Chavez affirmed.
The two-stage intervention —within the framework of the measures to combat COVID-19— will take place simultaneously in Lima's districts of Los Olivos, Comas, Carabayllo and Puente Piedra.
The first stage —or trial phase— will last a week in order to guide and
raise awareness among public establishments and urban transport providers about compliance with biosafety measures against the novel coronavirus.
"The second stage of the plan envisages compliance with the provisions within the framework of social gathering restrictions and/or activities that are harmful to the population," he added.
According to Chavez, the Armed Forces' support complements the work undertaken by the National Police in coordination with municipal inspectors from the above-mentioned districts, as well as with State-run institutions. In total, 2,400 members from said entities will be deployed.
The municipalities will be able to supervise the establishments where guidance was provided and information was collected, so as to verify if health protocols were adapted.
If the issues persist, the corresponding fines will be imposed, and establishments may be shut down.
Chavez assured that inspectors will stand firm when it comes to the implementation of biosafety guidelines and the number of people in the locations.
The operations plan is intended to identify public establishments that fail to comply with the regulations and is based on the "Guidelines for health surveillance of workers at risk of COVID-19 exposure," issued by the
Ministry of Health (Minsa).
